Modern concepts of awareness and respect to ones own health in male residents of metropolis of Western Siberia

Objective: to study the awareness and attitude towards one's own health in the open population of men aged 45-69 years in Novosibirsk. A random representative sample of men aged 45-69 years (n=781) has been surveyed in the prospective cohort study HAPIEE in 2003-2005. The attitude towards one's own health was studied using the questionnaire "Knowledge and attitude towards one's own health," adapted to the population studied. Results: 70% of subjects had low self-esteem in regard to their health. Most men had beliefs that they could get a cardiovascular disease (CVD) in 5-10 years. The study showed high prevalence of negative behavioral characteristics in examined population and demonstrated a great demand in prevention of CVD among men of 45-69 years of age.
