The anthropological (or human oriented) approach to the formation of the modern image of the city is the most relevant, since it takes into account the most complex socio cultural problems of modernity. The artistic image of the city as one of its subimages creates a special space of the sensual and emotional. In this space, the event of the meeting of the Ego of a person with the Ego of the city takes place. The article examines the ability of monumental sculpture to "work" with the pain points of modern society on the example of one of the trends in modern monumentalism countermonument. These pain points are collective memory, national and cultural identity, individual and collective responsibility not only for the past, but also for the future. Modern monumental sculpture becomes part of the complexly organized artistic image of the city. It is able to vitalize his energy and make him authentic, consonant with the changes that are taking place in the public and individual consciousness, in the perception of the world of modern man.
