In the field of musical art, it is important to have an idea not only about what the essence of a musical text is in its sound and written embodiment, but also about who plays a key role in the process of creating, performing, analyzing and presenting a musical canvas. The focus of this article is the activity of a musicologist, the fourth musical subject of an academic orientation, which has something in common with the work of three other subjects: composer, performer, listener (audience). In the conditions of the present time, there is a rather multifaceted panorama of musicological preferences. The author is wondering who is a musicologist, tracing the facets of the activity of a musicologist - a music theorist in the conditions of the 21st century. Within the framework of this article, a concise commentary with a philosophical and cultural understanding of the issues is presented, as well as the practical component.
