Peculiarities of irony translation (in Sue Townsend's novels "The queen and I", "Number ten" and their translations into Russian)

The article is devoted to the analysis of ways of translating irony from English into Russian in the literary text. The article discusses the need to preserve the stylistic, emotional, and evaluative meaning components in order to adequately convey the ironic modality based on the discrepancy between the expressed and the implied. The methods of irony translation are divided into the ones using direct equivalents, synonymous equivalents and translation transformations. The article also provides unsuccessful examples of translation of irony into the Russian language to demonstrate the complexity of interlingual irony interpretation.
