The article is devoted to some features of the category of narrative modality in A. S. Pushkin’s prose fragments. In the article, we analyze two main types of focalization in Pushkin's prose passages: external and internal. As one can see, the passages are dominated by internal focalization and a homodiegetic narrator, which is explicated through self-presentation. Personality traits of Pushkin’s narrator using subjective form of presentation are manifested in actions, comments, and judgments about the events. External focalization in the passages is realized in the figure of the narrator, whose simplicity of narration is created by Pushkin through the use of rhetorical and stylistic devices typical for spoken language. The choice of a particular type of localization corresponds to Pushkin’s artistic goals. External focalization creates in this passages a certain philosophical ‘fairness’ regarding the depiction of life. Homodiegetic protagonist-narrator, as a direct participant in the events, on the one hand, distances the author from what is happening in the text, and on the other, he motivates the naturalness and emotional tension of the character’s speech.
