Specifics of the sociological approach to the study of mental health

The paper examines the phenomenon of mental health, which is an integral element in the functioning of the individual in society. In particular, the difference between biomedical and sociological approaches to human mental problems is analyzed, and the need for sociological study of this topic is substantiated. The subject field and features of sociological studies of mental health are defined, in particular the approaches of sociologists - specialists in the designated field - J. Busfield and P. Toits are presented. The paper also provides a brief excursus into the history of the institutionalization of the sociology of mental health. In conclusion, the author highlights the social factors that affect the level of mental health of the person. In conclusion it is evident that mental ailment, as a rule, acts as a response to social pressure, so ways to improve the situation should be sought in changing the social system, the development of supportive resources of society.
