Specificity of the reconstruction of the subject perspective in translating (a case study of R. Zelazny's novel “Creatures of light and darkness”)

The article presents the results of a comparative research of the subject perspective organization in the novel by R. Zelazny and its Russian translations from the point of view of the recipient factor. The research focuses on linguistic means that form a certain relation of subjects of dictum and modus in the novel. The features of expressing the positions of different subjects are an important aspect because they can create the illusion of a dialogue between the reader and the narrator, and even the characters. In some texts this illusion of dialogue with the reader is observed throughout the work. In addition, in some cases the positions of the out-of-text and in-text addressee are mixed, until it is impossible to distinguish them. In the article have been analyzed the main differences between translation strategies and fragments that present difficulties for translation. The experimental novel “The Creatures of Light and Darkness” (1969) and its three translations into Russian were chosen as illustrative material. Comparative semantic and syntactic analysis of translations and their comparison with the English original allowed to establish the basic principles of building a subjective perspective in the novel, and also showed possible differences in the reader's perception of texts. The results of the study make it possible, on the one hand, to identify the most correct translation by a formal criterion, and on the other hand, to demonstrate the difference between English and Russian when transmitting the structure of the subject perspective.
