Life chances represent a multifaceted phenomenon that encompasses a variable set of opportunities and deprivations, covering four main domains of public life, these determining an individual’s position within the social hierarchy. This article presents the results of theoretical and methodological reflections on stud-ies of Russians’ life chances, highlighting the importance of applying specific approaches for correct in-terpretation of primary data obtained through surveys of Moscow residents on their subjective satisfaction with objective living conditions. The object of study is the youth of Big Moscow, the subject is the pecu-liarities of life chances that Muscovites have as inhabitants of a heterotopic megacity. The goal of the ar-ticle is to identify the characteristics of living conditions and risks for young residents of Moscow as a modern heterotopia for subsequent collection of empirical data on the range of life opportunities and dep-rivations. Research findings: The data analyzed included both Russian and international scientific publi-cations, as well as Russian studies of youth public opinion. Despite the inequality of opportunities be-tween provinces and capitals, living conditions for Russians, regardless of where they reside, are gradual-ly becoming more equalized. Megacities retain significant advantages, such as access to better education-al and medical institutions, but are also a source of unique risks and deprivations, such as social alienation and environmental problems, which make living there less attractive. The uniqueness of Big Moscow as a heterotopic megalopolis, characterized by a high level of cultural and social diversity, complex connec-tions, and technological advancement, underscores the importance of studying life chances within this special social environment. In this context, subjective assessments of satisfaction may diverge from ob-jectively established opportunities and deprivations, and investigating this divergence will allow for a deeper understanding of urban processes and their impact on social inequality.
