“The debate is not over, the passions are running high!” (Review of the book: Mishkurov E. N., Novikova M. G. Translatability - untranslatability: past days and thoughts...: monograph. Moscow: Flinta, 2024. 248 p.)

Based on a comprehensive review of an impressive array of diverse and often contradictory perspectives in translation studies, the authors of the reviewed monograph present a unified theory of the aporia of “translatability - untranslatability”. They argue for the necessity of creating an integrative paradigm capable of combining the strengths of contemporary translation models. To this end, the authors propose a discursive-playful paradigm of translation, whose paradoxical nature is reflected in a “scale of translatability levels”. Their discussion builds on the previously developed “cognitive-hermeneutic methodological standard”, a four-step matrix encompassing the stages of pre-understanding, understanding, interpretation, and translation decision-making. This framework enables various forms of interlingual mediation.
