The article is devoted to an analysis of the lexical means used by Arthur Conan Doyle to create the image of the main character of the detective novel "The Study in Scarlet". The work examines various means of speech expressiveness, techniques such as metaphors, epithets, comparisons and other expressive means that help to form a multifaceted and memorable image of Sherlock Holmes. Special attention is paid to how the means of speech expressiveness, which describe the characters, characterize their actions and motivation. As a result of the research, it is concluded that the use of various means of expression not only enriches the text, but also reveals the inner world of the characters more deeply, allowing the reader to better understand their psychology and character.
