Old towns as historical settlements in the European North of Russia: transformation of functions and models of urban development
The paper considers the evolution of the old towns of the European North, founded before 1918, within the boundaries of the absolute, extreme and moderately uncomfortable zones. The paper reveals the leading factors shaping the urban network in the northern territories in the pre-revolutionary period and the changes in their administrative status and functions during the Soviet and post-Soviet periods. The dynamics of the population size of the old towns of the European North and the changes in their urban structure between 1897 and 2025 are analyzed. The functional typology of old towns and established models of urban development are presented. Special attention is paid to historical settlements as objects of historical and cultural heritage and as centers for the development of cultural and educational tourism.
