The article focuses on the analysis of the status of the prosecutor’s office in the framework of criminal proceedings. Special emphasis is made on the change in the scope of powers of the prosecution authorities in this area after the emergence of a new state - the Russian Federation, when there was a refusal of the dominance of the prosecution authorities, which exercised supervision and performed other functions. The study of the current status of the prosecutor’s office should be carried out in comparison with the previously existing one, because such a comparative analysis allows not only to assess the feasibility of changes, but also to formulate proposals for the further formation of the status of the Russian prosecutor’s office in the field of criminal proceedings. The purpose of the study is to identify trends in the changes in the scope of powers of the Russian prosecution authorities in the framework of criminal proceedings. The author comes to a conclusion that in the light of administrative reform and transformation of the system of public administration bodies, as well as the creation of a new structure - the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, the scope of powers of the prosecutor’s office was significantly reduced, which became and remains the subject of active discussions. The article substantiates that in modern conditions there are grounds for revising the existing status and increasing the scope of powers of prosecution bodies.
