The object of research of the article is J.King’s art-nouveau illustrationsfor the fairytale “The Birthday of the Infanta” by O.Wilde. The analysis ofthe interaction between the text and the illustrations is carried out as well asthe relations between the modernist style in the text and in the illustrationsare analysed. The illustrations enrich the fairytale with new meanings whichare revealed in the article. The conclusion drawn conveys the difference inthe interpretation of the end of the fairytale by the writer and by the artist.
