The article examines the concept of fear in its philosophical and religious aspects. The authors consider the interpretation of fear in ancient, medieval philosophy, in the works of S. Kierkegaard, N.A. Berdyaev. Particular attention is paid to the concept of religious fear, the nature of which is explored here from the perspective of the Christian religion and with reference to the Holy Scriptures. The authors analyze some stories from the New Testament and examine them in the context of the philosophy and theology of the Franco-American religious scholar and anthropologist R. Girard. Current research shows that there is a link between fear and mimetic desire. Likewise, the authors of the article conclude that fear in the context of dramatic theology can be seen as a kind of engine of the evangelical story of world salvation.
