Introduction. The relevance of the work is determined by the increased interest of many researchers to the history of the development of Mordovian linguistics. The purpose of the article is to consider the birth and development of closely related Mordovian languages: Moksha and Erzya. The object of research is written monuments of these languages, as well as the works of Mordovian, Russian and international scholars. This work is of interest to researchers of the Finno-Ugric languages and can be used in teaching Philology students. Materials and Methods. When writing the article, the following methods were used: an analytical and synthetic method for the search and analysis of relevant literature; comparative analysis to determine the core of various concepts, and a descriptive method. Results and Discussion. The article describes the history of the development of Mordovian linguistics, beginning from the moment of its beginning and up to the present time (XVII - beginning of the XXI century). It also analysis the contribution made by national and international linguists. Conclusion. The first written monuments in the Mordovian languages were created by foreign travelers as far back as the 17th century. As an area of study, Mordovian linguistics was formed at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to the works of such Russian linguists as M. E. Evseyev, A. P. Ryabov, D. V. Bubrich, F. I. Petersburgsky, and others. A great contribution to the development was made by Finnish and Hungarian linguists.
