Strategic priorities for improving the competitiveness of the fishing industry in the context of global challenges

Free access

The article explores strategic directions for improving the competitiveness of fishing industry enterprises in the context of globalisation, technological transformation and increasing environmental requirements. Based on the analysis of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) data for 2019-2023, corporate reporting of the leading market players (Mowi, Maruha Nichiro, “Russian Aquaculture”) and the results of expert questionnaire survey (n=50) the key factors of competitiveness at macro-, meso- and micro-levels are identified. It was found that technological modernisation (introduction of artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies), ESG-transformation (certification according to MSC/ASC standards) and export diversification are critical conditions for sustainable development of the industry. Through SWOT and PESTLE analyses, the risks of sanctions pressure and competition with alternative protein sources are confirmed, and the potential of ASEAN markets is identified. Practical recommendations include building digital supply chain management platforms, creating industry clusters and strengthening government support for research and development (R&D). The results of the study have been tested within the framework of the Strategy for the Development of the Fishery Sector of the Russian Federation until 2030.
