The paper focuses on the key event in the history of soviet literary translation under Stalin, the first all-union conference of translators hold in early January 1936 in Moscow. This important cultural event is discussed referring to previously unknown archival document, the almost complete transcript of the conference containing the debates on the plenaries reports. Basing on this transcript the paper aims to analyze the ideological context of soviet translator’s strategies to defend their methods of “accurate” and “free” translation.
