The article deals with the principles of plot building in the story “August Heat” by W.F. Harvey. The story consists of 11 episodes - “discrete units” that compose “the plot's essence”. The motive of genre is served as a uniting beginning in even-numbered episodes. The theme of art and artists combines with a thanatological motive in odd-numbered episodes. The episodes' system in the story organized by the principle of their interchange is presented as a specific one for the gothic prose.
