Structural and pragmatic characteristics of modern English compliment utterance

The aim of the scientific research is to elicit structural characteristics of compliment utterances in English-speaking linguacultures. The comparative analysis of modern compliment utterances, borrowed from contemporary fiction and the British National Corpus, has been conducted. It is essential to study structural characteristic features of compliment utterances in this respect due to the fact that compliments are aimed at pragmatically productive communication. It helps to reveal frequent structural patterns of compliments’ verbalization that achieve the proper perlocutionary effect. The methods of semantic and pragmatic interpretation, quantitative estimation are used in the study. It has been stated that English compliments are structured according to fixed patterns. Depending on the communication situation, compliment utterances exhibit certain specific features. The study results can be of use in the academic courses of Sociolinguistics, Stylistics and Pragmalinguistics, which provides practical value.
