Student Unrest in 1904–1905 at the Kaluga Theological Seminary

The article is devoted to the history of protest actions of students of the Kaluga Theological Seminary in 1904–1905. First, it is mentioned about the first riots that were in the Seminary long before the events of 1904. Then, on the basis of archival materials, in detail described are the student riots on November 9–12, 1904 and the proceedings that followed them. As a result of the investigation, the Holy Synod adopted a resolution that specified the procedure for admitting students to the Seminary who were dismissed for participating in riots. The article also describes the protest actions in autumn 1905, which became political ones under the influence of general strikes in the country. As a result of some concessions made to improve the educational process at the Seminary, the students’ discontent subsided. In conclusion, the author points out the different nature of the unrest in 1904 and 1905, and notes that the trend towards protest actions continued in the following years.
