The article deals with the temporal organization of Lermontov’s novel, which lacks a coherent biography of the hero and does not follow the chronological order of presentation of events, and the stories included in it. The author of the article draws attention to the contradiction between the temporal organization of the novel and the temporal organization of the stories, in which the presumption of rejection of the chronological sequence of the narrative is paradoxically destroyed. The whole and parts in terms of their temporal structure are arranged in different ways, as shown in the article. This is indicated by the correlation of the order of time and the order of the narrated events in the stories and in the novel. the narrator switches from the present tense (the time of the narration) to the past tense (the time of the narrated story) in “Bela”. Time plans intersect here. There is no temporal layering in “Maxim Maksimych”. The story is limited to the present. In “Taman” and in “The Fatalist” the time of the narrative, built in the form of memories, reflects the distance between the time of experiencing the events described and the time of telling about them. In “Princess Mary” the ratio of event time and narrative time determines the form of diary entries. Since the story here follows closely behind the story being told, the distance between times is reduced to a minimum. A detailed analysis made it possible to identify specific features of the temporal organization of the stories. At the same time, in each of them, time (both event and narrative) has its own distinctive properties. As for the temporal organization of the novel as a whole, its structure actualizes the universal senses of time by switching from “linear aspects” to “hierarchical” ones (P. Ricoeur). Thus, as the author of the article proves, the ontological plan of the narrative, which is important for the “Hero of Our Time”, is sharply highlighted.
