Моделирование - это возможность реализовать функционал живого органа и проанализировать влияние различных факторов на него. В частности, моделирование движения каловых масс по кишечнику позволяет нам исследовать взаимосвязь между моторикой и обработкой кишечного содержимого, временем его прохождения и перистальтическими волнами. Кишечник представляет собой систему сложной геометрической формы, с волновыми движениями разных конфигураций и многоуровневой обработкой внутреннего содержимого. В то же время медицинское исследование индивидуальных особенностей его строения и функции занимает довольно много времени. Построение персонализированной модели, учитывающей все эти факторы, является нетривиальной задачей. Однако такая модель (если ее удастся разработать) сведет к минимуму использование инвазивных оценок состояния пациента. Моделирование также может быть использовано в качестве основы для планирования терапевтических мероприятий для конкретного пациента. Представлен обзор современных математических моделей, разработанных за последние пару десятилетий для моделирования движения каловых масс по толстой кишке.
