Artificial intelligence in english teacher training: opinions of students and teachers

The purpose of the paper is to compare the opinions of students and teachers on the methods and effectiveness of applying artificial intelligence (AI) in the training of future English teachers in language disciplines.The article analyzes the opportunities of AI in education; identifies popular neural networks applied by pedagogical students and professors; outlines the prompts and tasks to be used in training future foreign language teachers applying AI; based on a survey, the degree of readiness of professors to teach students to learn using AI is determined; the effectiveness of AI inclusion in teaching and learning based on the opinion of professors and students is investigated. It has been found that students primarily apply text-based AI ChatGPT, Midjourney, Yandex Editor, DeepSeek, GigaChat and ReWrite; professors prefer generative GPT agents. It has been determined that students apply AI to search for information, make plans, exercise complexes, presentations, text compression etc.; professors apply AI to create groups of exercises, reviews, lesson plans. On the basis of the comparative analysis, it has been found that students’ and professors’ knowledge of AI capacities is not identical; students; skills in using neural networks do not depend on their professional training direction, professors’ skills do; students’ application of AI is not directed or recognized by teachers. Professors do not seek to apply AI in their profession, students are motivated to apply AI. It has been concluded that opportunities offered by AI should be applied in pedagogical universities to train future teachers; universities should address the development of AI manifestos to regulate the legal aspects of AI.
