The study examines the goal setting of history in the developing context of philosophical and scientific thought. It identifies the determinants of the desire of the traditional philosophy of history to coordinate history in relation to the purpose. The research demonstrates that the idea of the predetermined goal of history is a manifestation of the transcendental thinking of history. Such a goal is always a certain transcendental factor introduced into history. The study correlates the idea of the historical purpose with the idea of the historical necessity. The author notes that criticism in relation to the teleological view of history should not lead to the conclusion that any idea of the goal as applied to history is unjustified. It is possible that we will set the historical goals for ourselves and try to implement them. The absence of a transcendental goal setting in history leaves a wide room for human goal setting. The paper considers the prerequisite for the possibility of achieving historical purposes by people. The ability of a person to set historical goals and achieve them is defined as human freedom in history.
