The article deals with the theme of artistic creation in Buryat novels of the late 1940s - early 1950s. The appeal of Buryat novels to the theme of creative art at the initial stage of its development shows that, despite the ideological dictatorship of those years, manifested, in particular, in the dominance of collective consciousness over personal, writers succeeded in overcoming the strict requirements of socialist realism for expressing their own thoughts and feelings, asserting in the works inherent value of the individual. Folk songs usually expressing the public views on people and events, conveying lirical mood of the characters, are woven into the artistic fabric of the novels "Steppe Woke Up" by Zh. Tumunov and “In the Early Dawn" by Kh. Namsarayev. The novel "Dorzhi, the Son of Banzar" by Ch. Tsydendambaev is permeated with the spirit of folk art, idea of the people’s giftedness and talent. The images of the storyteller, artist, musician and other creators of the people are presented in this work. The central character of the novel "Golden Rain" by Zh. Tumunov is a professional artist, its main idea is the problem of mission of the artist.
