The relevance of the research topic follows from the speech of the President of the Russian Federation V.V. Putin at the board of the Ministry of Internal Affairs on April 02, 2024. In connection with the terrorist attack on March 22 in Krasnogorsk, Moscow Region, at the Crocus City Hall concert hall, which was committed by Tajik migrants, the President stressed that it is necessary to radically and profoundly change approaches to migration policy. It is necessary to ensure the security of the state and society, to preserve inter-ethnic and inter-religious harmony, the cultural and linguistic identity of the peoples of the country. Only those people who respect our traditions, language, history and culture should come to live and work in Russia. In many cases, illegal migration, the ideological work of false preachers and Internet sites is a favorable environment for extremist activity and criminality [1]. The purpose of the study is to consider, on the basis of official statistical data, trends in the development of migration in the Russian Federation over a twenty-five-year period. The object of the research is internal, international, labor, and forced migration. Among the research methods used are the statistical method, analysis and synthesis, deduction and induction, and comparison. In the course of the study, the results were obtained. Official statistical data reflecting migration trends from 1997 to 2022 were used. The dynamics of the number of migrants in internal, international, labor, and forced migration are shown; trends - an increase in the number of arriving and departing migrants in general and internal Russian migration; increasing and decreasing arrivals in international migration with different countries; an increase in those who left for the CIS countries; reduction of migration growth in general, urban and rural population; an increase in the number of participants in the State Program to Assist the Voluntary Resettlement of Compatriots Living Abroad to the Russian Federation; reducing the number of internally displaced persons and refugees; an increase in the number of people granted temporary asylum; increase and decrease in labor migrants from different countries. The main conclusion is related to the need for a radical change in the main approaches to migration policy, strengthening control over migration, to which the President paid special attention. A review of the literature allows us to assert that there is a large number of publications that provide a meaningful analysis of such topical problems as migration policy, state regulation of migration processes, management of migration processes, domestic, international, labor, and forced. illegal migration, implementation of the State Program to Assist the Voluntary Resettlement of Compatriots Living Abroad to the Russian Federation, migration processes as a factor of national security, migration legislation, migration crimes, migration processes in Russian regions, adaptation and integration of migrants.
