The purpose of the article is to develop theoretical provisions aimed at the effective development of retail chains in the food market. The article offers and describes the functions of a retail chain: social, commercial, reproductive, spatial movement of goods, maintaining the balance of supply and demand, implementing the effects of scale, experience and synergy. Knowledge of the goals, functions, properties and principles of network operation will allow creating a mechanism for their regulation, which guarantees internal integrity and harmonious interaction with the subjects of the external environment.
