The theory of regional development and the practice of spatial planning

The article makes an attempt to bring together the practice of territorial planning and the theory of territorial development, and to show the ways of such convergence and the conditions under which it is possible. For this purpose the author proposes to use certain geographical and economic theories, the interconnected set of which reveals the essence of spatial-and-social processes. The subject of territorial planning is the activities of households, neighboring communities, municipalities and other territorial economic systems. The author considers that territorial planning can be improved if a system of strategic planning is formed and town-planning policy is promoted. In the end, the article highlights the most significant directions of elaboration and implementation of territorial development documents.
