Against the background of the historical reassessment of previous norms and values of previous generations, which began in the second half of the 20th century, this article examines the chronology of the formation and establishment of modern sociological theory, the reasons for the departure from “classical orthodoxy”, as well as the features of the development of epistemological tools for cognition of such a complex and comprehensive phenomenon and phenomenon as globalization. Particular attention is paid to A. Appadurai’s theory of imaginary landscapes, which is characterized by a complex and intricate wordplay. This theory highlights the uncertainty and ambiguity of the reality of globalization, allows for a variety of interpretations, and flexibly adapts theoretical models and research strategies. The conclusion is formulated that A. Appadurai’s theory has a high heuristic potential. It can provide a new perspective on already wellstudied phenomena, which may be of interest not only to anthropologists, but also to philosophers and sociologists.
