Therapeutic ability of shikonin-containing biopolymer film in the integrated treatment of patients with chronic inflammatory destructive lesions of the oral mucosa

The study evaluated the clinical and microbiological efficacy of a topical use of new biopolymer film containing herbal medicine, shikonin, for treatment of 30 patients (34-72 year of age) suffering from the erosive lichen planus and oral mucosa leukoplakia associated with pathogenic bacterial and fungal microflora. The study showed that topical use of the new therapeutic agent decreased the time required for alleviation of pain and improved epithelialization of the damaged oral mucosa. Clinical efficacy of the biopolymer films containing the anti-inflammatory agent, shikonin, was associated with antibacterial and antifungal effects of this compound expediting normalization of microbiological balance in this category of patients.
