The term as an object of research in linguistics

In modern linguistics more and more attention is paid to linguistic analysis of specific lexis in different fields of knowledge. Terms express a variety of special naming units, which form term systems. Each term system denotes a system of definitions in a certain science, scientific direction, field of knowledge. One of the main problems in studying and understanding a term as a linguistic category in modern linguistics is its definition. The necessity to study the mechanisms and principles of verbalization of scientific knowledge, besides the quantitative data about the terms used in modern language, is caused by several important factors. Term as a complicated unit is defined in accordance with a certain aspect. The article analyses the following characteristics of terms: systematic character, independence from the context, accuracy, internationality and stylistic neutrality. Terms must not only have relevant features to fulfill their functions, they also have to meet a number of specific requirements. Today, more and more researches of terms’ emergence and functioning in the language are based on cognitive methods and approaches to the research of specialized vocabulary. In the modern world, terminology plays an important role in people’s intercourse and communication.
