The article reflects the cooperation of American and Russian historians and shows that both countries and their historians should determine what kind of past we do not want in our future. General characteristics of the political and socio-economic state of Russia at the turn of the XVI-XVII centuries are given. Particular attention is paid to the period of "Troubles," when, according to many historians, a large-scale civil war has unfolded in Russia, accompanied by attempts at foreign intervention in the struggle for the Russian throne. In preparing the article, the authors used both Russian and English language work on this stage in the history of the Russian state. This approach to work reflects the mutual interest of American and Russian historians to a deeper understanding of the history of our countries.
