The article is devoted to the topical issue of the role of permanent epithets, the meaning of which is associated with typologization and idealization, in the context of the tradition of national epics. The aim is to study the epithets of the Xinjiang Oirat version of the epic “Dzhangar” from the point of view of their typifying role in ethnocultural and mythoepic traditions. The constant epithets characterizing the characters, objects and phenomena of one's own / another's in the epic picture of the world are considered. In the Xinjiang Oirat epic, archaic ideas about the “alien” world, associated with the “other world”, where demonic beings rule, have been preserved. The enemy country is most often referred to through the epithet of the antipode. Epithets in the names of antipodes, as a rule, have a terrifying connotation of ferocious, mighty, overwhelming. The word “har” (black) is used in the name of toponymic objects of the “alien / enemy world”. It is also given in the nomination of representatives of the Lower World, chthonic creatures and monsters. The names and nicknames of the epic antagonist heroes, as representatives of the “alien / other world”, are accompanied by individual characterizing epithets, where black is a marker of their demonic power and strength, as well as evil intentions and insidious essence. Epic onomastics is represented by the names of heroes and characters, in which the structure of the full names of epic heroes is usually multicomponent, including a personal name, title and definition-epithet with positive connotations (glorious, great, fierce, beautiful). The names of epic heroes (bogatyrs), as a rule, are accompanied by individual epithets, serving as their constant qualitative characteristics, which indicate their occupation and age. The names of some of these heroes retain archaic features of pre-Buddhist beliefs and shamanic mythology, totemistic cults and come from the names of animals, animals and birds, symbolizing strength, courage, dexterity and other knightly virtues. The cult and veneration of ancestors are reflected in the epithets of the names of heroes and antipodes, indicating family and clan affiliation. The exceptional value and dignity of heroic weapons and equipment are emphasized by epithets referring to the material from which it is made.
