This article considers some typological characteristics of French historical genre of romance dating from knightly epos, defines the philological term "romance", remarks the role of French romance in the making and the development of European genre, describes the stylistic singularity of French historical romance at example of Victor Hugo's romance «The Man Who Laughs».
