The article examines the basic criteria of precariat as highlighted in G. Standing's theories, post -Marxist and critical theories. The positive and negative consequences of the formation of the precariat in society are assessed, as well as its impact on the future of society. Subsequently, the problems of assessing the status of the precariat as a new intermediate class with characteristics of post-modern society in Russia are outlined, including the fact that freelancers are not always registered as self-employed or individual entrepreneurs, a significant layer of individual entrepreneurs are full owners of small and large businesses with interests different from the precariat, and microentrepreneurs are also not always self-employed with several employees. Meanwhile, an attempt is made to assess the state of precarity in Russia through direct and indirect statistical indicators.
