Transformation of cultural practices in the age of new media

The article examines the transformations occurring in cultural practices under the influence of digital culture and the proliferation of new media. It elucidates the author’s specific understanding of the term “cultural practices” and, based on this definition, describes those practices that have become feasible only in modern digital society. Grounded in an activity-based approach, the functions of cultural practices are outlined. The specific nature of their transformation in the age of new media is defined. Five significant shifts in this context are highlighted. Illustrative examples of specific cultural practices originating and being reproduced in modern digital societies, including within the Russian context, are provided. Particular emphasis is placed on illustrating the modification of cultural practices through the example of musical content creation and consumption.
