After the Time of Troubles (early 17th century) and the stabilization of social relations in the country, the legislation in the Russian centralized state (hereinafter also referred to as the Moscow state) began to be updated, and this process was actively developed from the middle of that century. The most important legal monument of that time was the Cathedral Code adopted in 1649, which began to regulate various aspects of the activities of state bodies at a systemic level, including this applies to criminal proceedings. The article presents the historical and legal characteristics of the criminal process, and first of all, it is about the legal consolidation of various stages of bringing persons who have committed socially dangerous acts to appropriate responsibility. To achieve this research goal, the normative legal acts regulating the criminal process are analyzed, and first of all, of course, the Cathedral Code (the emphasis is on this act), as well as scientific works that touch upon the stated topic. It is noted that in the Moscow state, the regulation of the criminal process received a certain systematicity, in particular, a step was taken to a clearer distinction between criminal process and civil process, the procedure for considering criminal cases began to be regulated in more detail, meaning the summoning of participants in the case to court, maintaining documentation, etc. It is also important to note that the investigative type of criminal process began to displace the adversarial one, which testified to the strengthening of the role of the state in maintaining law and order in the country.
