The Streetlamp: making of Russian light in the cultural space of the city
This article offers the first sustained cultural-philosophical examination of the streetlamp as a complex and multifaceted phenomenon within Russian and global urban culture. Moving beyond its conventional interpretation as a mere utilitarian device, the authors argue that the streetlamp functions as an active agent in the formation of the city's cultural code—a nodal point where technological innovation, social practice, and artistic imagination intersect. Particular attention is devoted to Russia's distinctive trajectory in the history of illumination, from Peter the Great's «standard lanterns» of 1718 to Tsarskoye Selo's emergence in 1896 as the first fully electrified city in Europe. This history reveals how imported European technologies were not simply replicated but fundamentally reinterpreted within the Russian context, becoming embedded in the military, administrative, and aesthetic logics of imperial state-building. Through readings of Russian poetry (Blok, Mayakovsky), the article demonstrates how the image of the lantern becomes central to existential and historiosophical reflection. Introducing the concept of the «hybrid object,» the authors show that the streetlamp materializes the inextricable entanglement of technology, myth, social ritual, and aesthetic experience. The philosophy of the streetlamp, it is argued, constitutes a practical philosophy of Russian culture itself—a culture capable of synthesizing heterogeneous elements and fashioning an anthropogenic cosmos from the most ordinary elements of the urban environment.
