The article discusses the management of project activities in the public sector from the point of view of competencies that a manager should possess. Creating a project is aimed at obtaining a unique end result with restrictions on time, resources and budget. Project management in the public sector is not aimed at making a profit, but at meeting the social or other social needs of society. Public sector projects are projects in the field of social assistance, healthcare, education, security, culture, science, etc. When developing and implementing the process of project management in the public sector, it is important to take this specificity into account. The result of this study is the development of a list of competencies that are necessary for the head of a state or municipal project to achieve the planned result. The article also highlights the differences in project management in the private and public sectors.
