The modification of the traditional manor conceptual framework in the post-reform period is natural, since it was during that period that the manor acquired new, previously unusual features, having undergone significant transformation processes. This led to the fact that in the post-reform era, the number of manor terms is simply amazing in its abundance. The earliest definition of a manor has been revealed in the Dictionary of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Its evolution is considered. The main synonyms of homestead as a term are analyzed. Country yards, dachas and farmsteads are investigated. There is a period when all these concepts began to mean the same thing. The author notes that the artistic study of manors, which arose at the beginning of the twentieth century. largely contributing to the perception of the estate as a potential object of cultural heritage, forced the last time before the Revolution to think about the terminological apparatus, however, despite the abundance of terms, until 1917 there was no general encyclopedic definition of the estate. Nevertheless, these attempts are important enough to understand the estate as a multifaceted phenomenon.
