The article is devoted to the analysis of two ontological forms of cognition of an individual and society, namely utopia and anti-utopia. These forms reflect different scenarios of the future development of mankind, from optimistic to pessimistic. Notably, utopias and anti-utopias share both common and distinctive features. The authors place particular emphasis on examining the legal component in the genres of utopia and anti-utopia, specifically evaluating them as a form of special reflection on legal relations that model the interrelations between man and society in the categories of law: freedom, rights, duties, and responsibilities. The problem of humanization of the space of human and social life is of particular importance in the modern world. The statement and consideration of this problem through the prism of literary and philosophical genres: utopia and anti-utopia allows to reveal possible prospects of social development in the light of ontological need to make an individual and society free and happy.
