Макрофаги играют центральную роль в патогенезе атеросклероза и являются хозяином для ряда вирусов. Холестерин также играет ключевую роль в реакциях врожденного иммунного ответа против вирусной инфекции. Хотя ослабление врожденного иммунного ответа за счет увеличения содержания холестерина в клетке может быть преднамеренной стратегией, используемой вирусами для повышения патогенной эффективности, рост риска атеросклероза может быть побочным продуктом этого. В обзоре описаны различные механизмы, позволяющие вирусам использовать метаболизм холестерина в макрофагах, отбирая холестерин либо на цели увеличения вирусной репликации и/или изменяя врожденный иммунный ответ. Дальнейшее выяснение механизмов связи вирусных инфекций с метаболизмом холестерина в макрофагах может быть полезным для разработки подходов к лечению как атеросклероза, так и вирусных заболеваний.
