Te contribution of St. Philaret (Drozdov) to the process of translating the bible into Russian

Tis article offers a systematic study of the principles of translating Sacred Scripture that were formulated by St. Philaret (Drozdov) and lie at the core of the Synodal Translation of the Bible into literary Russian. Given modern scholarship, the author demonstrates the scientific validity of St. Philaret's views on translating the Old Testament, which had been criticized by his contemporaries. On the basis of examples of concrete corrections made by Metropolitan Philaret to the draf of the New Testament translation, the author demonstrates that the saint viewed the translation process not as a narrowly-focused project for the benefit of the Church only, but as a vehicle for the Christian transformation Russian society at large.
