The article discusses the “gnomi” (γνώμη) phenomenon and its effect when translating texts into the Chinese language or editing those translated into Chinese. This phenomenon is closely connected to the issue of subjectivity of translation decisions and editorial revisions being made. This issue is rather serious as the translation decision cannot be justified without achieving a certain level of objectivity and impartiality. Putting this issue in the theological perspective makes it possible to explore one more aspect of this issue, which helps reveal this problem more fully and bring the gnomi of the translator, editor, and reader to a conscious level. Without this, the final translation of the text may fail to meet the original goals. Taking this factor into account consciously is supposed to increase the successful reception of a translated text by the target audience, which is really crucial when making a new Orthodox translation of the Holy Scripture into the Chinese language.
