Socio-economic processes in the Smolensk region differ from other regions of the Central Federal District of the Russian Federation. This is due not only to the post-Soviet economic potential that he inherited. The factors of geographical location are significant, which make it borderline and intercapital. If the influence of the border position on the economic development of the regions has been studied quite extensively, then the intercapitalism has practically not been studied. In the framework of the sociological study, it was possible to establish the interest of Smolensk consumers in travel for shopping and services to the Moscow region. The factors that predetermine the decision of consumers to travel to a neighboring region are highlighted. A formula has been developed for calculating the number of residents of a region who are ready to go to a neighboring region to make purchases. A trial calculation was carried out on the values obtained from the results of research and statistical observations by the territorial bodies of state statistics. The results presented in the article can be the basis for calculations to predict the behavior of consumers in the intercapital region, depending on changes in the characteristics of the consumer market in adjacent regions, including the capital.
