Intravenous iron and epoetin alfa for the treatment of postoperative anemia after orthopaedic surgery

The authors studied the effect of intravenous iron alone or in combination with epoetin alfa in total knee or hip replacement, on postoperative anemia. Postoperative treatment with intravenous iron significantly increased the concentration of hemoglobin. The combination of iron with a single dose of epoetin resulted in the greatest level of hemoglobin in the tenth postoperative day.
