Natural theology, being closely connected with the theology of Revelation, has held a significant place in the Christian understanding of God and His attributes for centuries. It played a particular role in Western scholasticism, which led to the separation of philosophical discourse about God from the practice of Christian life and, ultimately, to the criticism of natural theology. Many contemporary Orthodox theologians have been critical of rational arguments for the existence of God, seeing natural theology as a dangerous substitute for experiential knowledge of God. This article provides an overview of discussions regarding the status of natural theology in contemporary Orthodox theological thought, the challenges it poses, and the possibilities it offers for the development of natural theology today.
