Oriental Roots of the Proto-Hassuna Culture Based on the Data of the Ceramic Studies
There are two hypotheses explaining the origin of the Proto-Hassuna culture, both are linked to the name of N. O. Bader: the western hypothesis (starting from the Neolithic in the early VII millennium BC in the western part of the Upper Mesopotamia) and the eastern hypothesis (connections with the Zagros foothills and Iraqi Kurdistan). The study of the ceramics from the Central Zagros Mountains and its western foothills confirms the second hypothesis. In the first half of VII millennium BC the ceramic traditions of the Lower Mesopotamia Zagros foothills gradually spread along the foothills to the north reaching the eastern part of Upper Mesopotamia in the Proto-Hassuna period. In the central foothill areas these traditions intermingled with the ceramic traditions of the Central Zagros Mountains and adopted some of the elements of the latter. Eastern Syria which is the western fringe of the Proto-Hassuna core area is the place where the people of the Proto-Hassuna tradition came in contact with the populations of an absolutely different Neolithic tradition.
