Georgi Gospodinov’s “Time Shelter” as an Experience of Anti-Retrotopia

This article analyzes the novel “Time Shelter” (2020) by the Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov. The study focuses on how the novel’s artistic structure embodies the pressing issues of the crisis of temporality: the erosion of future perceptions, total nostalgia, and futurophobia gripping the European consciousness at the beginning of the 21st century. The paradoxical desire of contemporary society to seek refuge from the uncertainty of tomorrow in idealized images of the past was termed retrotopia by the philosopher Zygmunt Bauman. Gospodinov materializes the concept of retrotopia through a plot involving the creation of clinics of the past, where the everyday life of bygone decades is restored. The transition from personal memory therapy to national referendums on returning to the past transforms this humanistic project into a totalitarian threat. The authors of the article introduce the term anti-retrotopia to define the novel’s genre content: Gospodinov demonstrates the catastrophic consequences of a collective flight into the past. Particular attention is given to the analysis of the narrative’s subject organization, which includes masks of a secondary author, a narrator, and a protagonist who functions as the author’s double and whose name has appeared in Gospodinov’s previous texts. The text’s fragmentation, nonlinearity, and autometareflexivity allow “Time Shelter” to be qualified not only as a dystopia but also as a novel about a writer – a metanovel: in such a hybrid genre, it is evident how the process of writing becomes the author’s only way to hold onto the disintegrating time. This article analyzes the novel “Time Shelter” (2020) by the Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov.
