Time and history in the theology of Jurgen Moltmann

Among Western theologians of the 20th century Jürgen Moltmann occupies a special place. He proposed a holistic theological concept of time and history, as well as a number of practical consequences arising from it. In this model, the initial creation corresponds to the eschatological future. Between them there is historical time, characterized by the promise and the central events of the incarnation, crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. The entire history of the world is a continuous and integral process of the “history of God” with His creation. Moltmann considers as one of the most important contemporary tasks the synchronization of the mankind’s historical time, as well as the human and nature time. Christians are not just passive contemplators of history, but also its active creators. Moltmann seeks to present the Christian doctrine in the context of the most pressing issues of our time, which leaves a clear socio-political imprint on his theology, but at the same time allows him to consider it as an attempt to reflect and testify about the Christian faith facing the modern challenges. However, this concept, despite its harmony and completeness, contains a number of significant problems: the dissolution of Divine properties in history, the devaluation of historical time, the displacement of theology by the secular agenda.
